5S is an ongoing process. To continue gaining the benefits an organization needs to invest in structure and support so people have time to complete activities and sustain awareness.
The business culture must include the expectation for all workers to learn and be involved in 5S. By understanding the rewards workers are enthusiastic and motivated to help co-workers and offer suggestions for improvement.
This investment in 5S often includes recognition, rewards, contests and exhibit areas with before and after pictures.
Guidelines must be established for amounts of raw materials and timeframes relative to their use. Whether the amount needed is set for one hour, one shift or one day will depend on the product and process.
Accomplish Seiso or Scrub and Shine in your workplace by assigning clean, shine and inspect activities. A work center specific schedule of tasks, responsibilities and frequencies along with specific machine signboards help to ensure nothing is overlooked.
Remember to include the required scrub and shine tools in your “set in order” activities. To ensure that 5S benefits are not lost the practices must become habit on a daily basis. All team members need to “live” and “practice” the first 3 S’s – sort, set in order, shine and scrub. This can be accomplished by fully integrating 3S responsibilities into daily work activities.
To Standardize and Systematize 5S associates must:
Be able to spot normal versus abnormal situations.
Get prompt resolutions to any 3S issues.
Understand responsibilities and monitor overall effectiveness of activities.
Establish and follow guidelines and take actions for correction when they are not working.
Believe their improvement ideas are welcome and necessary to make 5S unbreakable.
Established standards with measures of achievement make 5S activities habit on a daily basis, as well as when the business changes and grows.
5S implementation reduces waste, improves organization and involves people in the improvement process. 5S provides a foundation for deploying lean.
